Taare Zameen Par (2007)tags: psychological Ishaan Awasthi is an eight-year-old whose world is filled with wonders that no one else seems to appreciate; colours, fish, dogs and kites are just not important in the world of adults, who are much more interested in things like homework, marks and neatness. And Ishaan just cannot seem to get anything right in class. |
Aamir at the helm of his career is full of choices. He could just say "YES" and loads of masala flick producers and directors will be camping in his yard.
Aamir is in a class above! He proves it every year with only one meaningful film. A film that is commercial motivated yet does not succumb to the pressures of commercial cinema.
"Taare Zameen Par" is one of Aamir's best so far. It is enlightening, it is entertaining, it shows the often ignored world of childhood that is full with colors, fishes, birds, dogs and kites. It derides the ignorant and insensitive parenthood and the incessant need for parents to have his child be the first in everything. It shows all the emotional nourishment that a growing child is often screaming to get yet ignored. The film beautifully crafts the progress of a linear story about a dyslexic boy who is subject of ridicule in his school as well as home. He is punished to transfer to a boarding school where his woes does not end and just when he is about the breakdown completely, a temporary teacher comes to his rescue. The film also does a great job in portraying the strong bonding between a mother and child without ever saying the word "I love you". For a sensitive person, some moments in this film are bound to be
I am not an overly sensitive person but the first time I heard that song "Maa", I got goosebumps. The song combines emotional lyrics with very melodic music. I cannot think of any other way the "suppressed cry" of the child could have been conveyed just as beautifully.
I really have to find superlatives to describe Darsheel Safary's acting in this film. How can someone that small be so matured to render the character so well. He has limited dialogs in the film and I think that is very well thought of by the writer. The character talks with his eyes, with his facial expressions. Couple of places, I could read the anger, frustration and a childhood curiosity altogether in his face. I am positive that Darsheel will one day be a great actor.
Highly recommended film, and I don't say that often about Bollywood.
You can't expect any less from Aamir Khan himself. But more than the acting, I will have to congratulate him on having the courage to get away from mundane factory produced dramas and taking up an issue like this. he wears producer, director and actor's hat simultaneously and doing all three very well.
Taare Zameen Par is a film with central character being a kid and yet it is not a film for kids. It is for their fathers, their mothers and their teachers and comes with a strong message.

Report stories, write blogs, write a review and just discover the enormous talent in south asian cinema that does not get much media exposure usually.
